Constitution of Pakistan

Chapter 1

Article 1 — The Republic and its territories
Pakistan shall be a Federal Republic known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Its territories include the Provinces of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the Islamabad Capital Territory, and such other territories as may be included in Pakistan.

Article 2 — Islam to be State religion
Islam shall be the State religion of Pakistan.

Article 2A — The Objectives Resolution
The principles and provisions set out in the Objectives Resolution are made a substantive part of the Constitution.

Article 3 — Elimination of exploitation
The State shall ensure the elimination of all forms of exploitation and gradually fulfil the fundamental principle that everyone contributes according to their ability and receives according to their work.

Article 4 — Right of individuals to be dealt with in accordance with law
Every person has the right to be treated in accordance with the law. In particular, no action detrimental to the life, liberty, body, reputation or property of a person may be taken except in accordance with law.

Article 5 — Loyalty to State and obedience to Constitution and law
Loyalty to the State is the basic duty of every citizen. Obedience to the Constitution and law is the obligation of every citizen wherever they may be, and of every other person within Pakistan.

Article 6 — High treason
Any person who abrogates, subverts, suspends or holds in abeyance the Constitution, or attempts or conspires to do so, commits high treason. A person aiding or collaborating in such acts is also guilty of high treason, subject to the constitutional provisions governing the offence.

Article 7 — Definition of the State
In this Part, unless the context otherwise requires, “the State” means the Federal Government, Parliament, Provincial Governments, Provincial Assemblies, and such local or other authorities in Pakistan as are empowered by law to impose a tax or cess.

Article 8 — Laws inconsistent with or in derogation of Fundamental Rights to be void
Any law, custom or usage having the force of law that is inconsistent with the Fundamental Rights is void to the extent of that inconsistency. The State shall not make any law that takes away or abridges these rights, subject to the constitutional exceptions.

Article 9 — Security of person
No person shall be deprived of life or liberty except in accordance with law.

Article 10 — Safeguards as to arrest and detention
A person who is arrested must be informed of the grounds for arrest and must be allowed to consult and be defended by a legal practitioner of their choice. The Constitution also provides safeguards concerning detention and requires an arrested person to be produced before a magistrate within the prescribed period, subject to constitutional exceptions.
